Fun facts (or not) about the history of hentai!

Do you watch hentai? But do you know the history and the fun facts?

Welcome to you in this new post of La Plume d'Eros ! Ahhhh... The hentai... If you are here, little rascal, it's because you like it, right? Or maybe you are very curious. I had fun browsing the net in search of interesting information about hentai. Not looking for videos, but for fun facts! And here are the few facts I thought it would be nice to share with you! Did you know any of them? Don't hesitate to tell us in comments if you do, or to share some with us! If you want to go even further, you have all the sources I used at the end of the article.

1. Tentacles : but why there are so many ????

It won't have escaped you if you watch hentai, or if you play naughty video games: tentacles are often present! Whether through monsters, dreams, strange devious means ... In short, it is not uncommon to see a pretty lady (and sometimes men) be "captured" by long tentacles that will play with her anatomy. But beyond the fantasy of all the erogenous zones of the body stimulated at the same time, do you know where the tentacles come from in hentai?

As you know, Japan has very strict laws on sexual censorship. It is mainly forbidden to show genitalia, male or female. To hide that today, hello pixels (by the way there is a fun fact about pixels next). But before the advent of pixel blurring and more relaxed censorship, penises were long considered a taboo in Japanese society and were simply banned. As there are smart rebels everywhere (and fortunately for us xD), some artists asked themselves: how to get around this censorship...? It was necessary to find a solution to overcome this while making the scene very clearly understood...

How to make an effective penetration without showing a phallus...? Well, let's use tentacles! They can move in all directions, grab the characters, be slimy, hard, soft... In short you understood it, they were perfect replacements, versatile and very explicit! The tentacular hentai was born!

Nowadays, censorship has been relaxed, but tentacles are still very present, so much so that some hentai have specialized in them! Fun fact, tentacle porn started over 200 years ago. In fact, the artist Katsushika Hokusai painted "Dream of the Fisherman's Wife," a very explicit...

2. Before applying the pixels... There are details... A lot of details !

Quite often, in Japanese hentai (and classic pornography) there are the pixels well placed... Well well placed... It depends on which side you are xD. Some will talk about "those f**king pixels" and others will appreciate this censorship, making it more "sensual and clean". Everyone has their own opinion.

But did you know that when hentai is drawn at its birth, there is no censorship? The drawings are completely detailed and explicit.

During its creation, the drawing is created with all the dirty details: genitals, fluids of all kinds, hairs, veins... In short, everything! Then, there is a "team of experts" who apply to censor the whole thing, with these famous pixels!

It's not for nothing that you can often find the uncensored versions of the hentai... Because some smart guys find the basic files... Or "lose them on the net" for our greatest pleasure... The rascals... xD. Rha ! There is nothing more frustrating to lose 3/4 of the image with blur, am I right? ^^.

3. Hentai is much older than you think...

Tout sur le hentai !
Author unknown / anime unknown.

How old are you ? More than 18, for sure, since you are on our site and you said you were at least 18... And according to you, hentai has been around for how long ? 30, 40, 80 years ?

Well, we're talking in hundreds of years in truth. And by the way, in Japan we don't talk about hentai, it's a very western term. "Hentai" in Japan means pervert. A girl can for example call you by this name if she catches you doing something perverse like looking at her buttocks. It is very common in drama, anime or manga to see this term.

In Japan, what we, we call hentai is rather called seijin-anime, seijin-manga or even ero-anime, and it is a form of Art that is very popular in Japan for centuries, called "Shunga". Shunga, which is the Japanese word for erotic art, has some very old works, which are even considered classical (such as the work cited above). It seems to exist since the Heian period (794 - 1185). There have been many censorships, bans and laws since its inception, and while it has changed a lot, these were the first steps of the genre! It's cute! So you could say that, "officially", hentai has been around since that time. It goes back, doesn't it? Ahhhh those Japanese... Those little perverts of... Wait, since when does porn exist in our country? Oh...

4. It is illegal to own some hentai, especially in the United States.

You probably know this... There is a wide, wide range of different hentai in the world... There are a plethora of categories, for every taste. Sometimes some of them have a larger community than others, like yuri or futanari, which appeal mostly to LGBTQ viewers.

But did you know that some hentais are simply illegal in some countries? In Japan it's ok, but elsewhere, not at all! And one style in particular: the lolicon. If you don't know what it is, it's anime or manga for adults which put forward characters with children's bodies... And that, it doesn't pass everywhere.

This type of hentai features underage girls(the most common), very often prepubescent. Initially, the authors created this to circumvent the censorship that prohibited showing pubic hair. They then removed the latter. And with this "shaving" of the private parts, the makers of hentai decided to present women who were (or seemed) underage, because it was more "cute" and logical. And even though today in Japan the laws are more relaxed, lolicon content is still widely produced.

However, in some countries such as the United States, lolicon is considered a form of obscenity and especially, a form of child pornography. It is normal after all, if the characters are minors in the work, then it is a sexual act involving them. And that is simply illegal in many countries. Drawing or not. It is therefore forbidden to possess or consult such content in these countries, even in a strictly private setting.

In Japan on the other hand, although critics have called the country to ban this kind of content (just to avoid giving twisted ideas to some...) it is currently, not illegal to produce or consume them, because children in these works do not exist. This remains fiction and therefore, it passes. To each his opinion, but it was an interesting fact.

5. Do you love a famous mangaka? He probably started in hentai...

Hentai drawing
Author : MOOL.

Do you like shows like Chobits? Hellsing ? Yotsuba ? Or even more famous, Ghost in the Shell ? Well believe it or not, all the artists responsible for these started by drawing hentai! And yes, major mangakas like Clamp, Kōta Hirano or Kiyohiko Azuma all got their start in the naughty industry... After proving their talent in drawing, they were able to make the leap to mainstream manga.

That said, sometimes they don't really choose what they draw... Indeed, when an artist works for an ero-anime company, he/she is a "simple employee". He/she doesn't really have the choice, he/she is told "you're going to draw this, go to work" and he/she does it. So if you learn that your favorite mangaka did hentai and you come across something absolutely horrible, don't blame him/her xD.

On the other hand, a little interesting information: there are also freelancers. They work with ero-anime productions. So, they are allowed to choose their own projects and also have the possibility to charge their own prices... So, in the industry, being a freelancer is a good thing. But it's not so easy... We'll get into that in detail in another article perhaps!

Like what, you have to start somewhere... And yet the hentai, for the authors and designers, it is frankly not terrible... Why? Because...

6. Hentai is one of the few adult industries... That doesn't make money...

Source : 援交NGヤンキーギャルJKを金で買ってみた ~誰かにバレないように声を我慢して密着えっち~

As you probably know, pornography is a huge business... So huge that there are certainly too many zeros behind it for us, simple otakus... It's one of the biggest money-making industries in the world. So logically, you say to yourself: the creators of hentai, the designers and authors, must be making a lot of money!

Well, no... Unlucky for them. In Japan for example, the hentai industry is one of the lowest paid entertainment industries. Animators who work in X-rated anime will receive salaries of about 7800€ per year (650€ per month on average...). Actors and actresses who dub the voices them, also receive very little, between 80 and 250€ per episode (against 120 to 400€ for regular anime) Yet, it is still more difficult, because in addition to the character's voices, there is the dirty part... I did not find the primary reason for this gap with other industries (apart from the following point), yet, the hentai is flourishing a little everywhere in the world...

We're not talking about freelancers with their Patreons or that sort of thing, we're talking about people working in the industry. And on top of that, it's compounded by one practice in particular...

7. Piracy is a real problem in hentai...

Hentai et piratage.
Author unknown. If you know who the drawing is from, please say so in the comments!

It's quite rare to see fans proudly displaying their hentai collection on large shelves in their living room or in their bedroom. We are not talking about classic anime series, which flood the mainstream market with goodies, shows, ads etc... Hentai is much more discreet and let's be honest, it's much harder to talk about it with your family on a New Year's Eve...

A lot of articles talk about studies (but I haven't found any reliable links to said studies, so take it with a grain of salt) done on piracy, and hentai is one of the first victims. Massive piracy, whether via download, streaming, torrent or private sharing sites, has heavily impacted the industry.

People don't want others to know that they use pornography, hentai or not. It's part of the private life and we don't display it. At least, not the way you would display your collection of classic anime and manga. Result, consumers hide it and, not wanting to buy for nothing (or not being able to buy, either financially or, because it is difficult to find it in their country), resort to piracy.

On the other hand, hentai being a very separate genre, it is difficult for the industry to make a place for itself with the general public. Consumers of "classic" pornography are adults, who often take out the credit card. On the other hand, manga and anime consumers are often young, and normally don't have access to this content. As for adults, at least in the West, they don't really want to pile up DVDs and hentai manga on their shelves. Maybe the dematerialization will reverse the trend, but for the moment, it is not the case. By the way, speaking of age...

8. Naughty anime, it's a young people thing!

Hentai et génération actuelle
Author : ˚☼。(https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/93101261)

According to Pornhub and its blog, if you like hentai and consume it regularly, then you're probably under 35... In fact, the famous adult site conducted its little survey and published the results: hentai is twice as popular among millennials and Generation Z as it is among Generation X and older groups.

And this is not surprising. Indeed, in the West in particular, the boom of anime and manga popularity started in the 2000s. So it is normal that our generation is much more interested in this phenomenon... Not to mention the explosion of the internet and the resources available... And the Rule34... Yes, who never searched for "Hinata rule34" or "Mikasa rule34"? Oh, don't make me believe that you never tried the name of a feat rule34 character... xD

By the way, in 2019, "hentai" and "japanese" (link here) were the most searched terms on the video platform! You can find many (English)articles that cover the topic in the list of sources at the bottom of this article.

9. There are conventions about hentai.

Hentai convention

Does the HentaiCon ring a bell? And yes, there are conventions, whether in Japan or abroad, dedicated to ero-anime! I didn't really find big conventions example in France (I did find among others the Y/CON, but it's not really about hentai in itself), but know that it exists.

Of course, even if private visitors are welcome, most of the time they are professional fairs, which gather actors of the industry, be it hentai, anime or video games. We are far from the little artist who offers his posters under the table, right? xD.

10. There is also a difference between hentai manga and hentai doujins.

Mikasa et Rivai hentai

Many people also like to read official paper/digital hentai or fan fiction. Generally, people who read hentai also like to watch hentai, especially the popular series they like. Whether in Europe, Japan or America, many of us like to read, that's a fact.

But did you know that there is a difference between "hentai manga" and "doujin hentai"? In Japan (and so in our country too ^^) the term "doujinshi" refers to a self-published work made by fans (fan fictions so). Besides, "Doujins" or "Doujinshi" is usually going to refer to something short, with a story of its own, complete, but set in the universe of another series. On the other hand, the term "hentai manga" refers to works made in a production studio. We are talking about professionals and not fans. It makes a difference... It's always interesting to know for our general pervert culture! Hey hey!

And that's it for these 10 interesting facts about hentai! I hope you liked them and that you learned a few things. If not, congratulations, you were already a Master / Mistress on the subject xD!

See you soon on our naughty Otaku couple blog!
